Cytopoint for Itchy Dogs - What You Need to Know

Itchy dogs are uncomfortable dogs - and itchy dogs in spring are one of the most common presentations we see at Middle Brighton Vet. Seasonal allergies can cause significant misery for affected pets, and for some dogs the standard treatments do not provide adequate relief.

Cytopoint is a different approach. Here is what it is, how it works, and who it is most suitable for.

What is Cytopoint?

Cytopoint (lokivetmab) is a monoclonal antibody injection specifically designed to treat atopic dermatitis - environmental allergic skin disease - in dogs. It works by targeting and neutralising interleukin-31 (IL-31), a protein that is the primary driver of the itch signal in allergic dogs. By blocking IL-31, Cytopoint interrupts the itch cycle at its source rather than broadly suppressing the immune system.

It is administered as a single injection by your vet and provides relief for four to eight weeks in most dogs, sometimes longer.

How is Cytopoint different from other treatments?

The main alternatives for managing atopic dermatitis in dogs are Apoquel (oclacitinib) - a daily oral tablet that works through a similar but broader mechanism - and corticosteroids such as prednisolone. Cytopoint's advantage is its targeted mechanism and its safety profile. Because it works like a natural antibody rather than a pharmaceutical drug, it has a very low side effect profile and can be used safely in dogs that cannot tolerate other medications, including those with liver disease or certain infections.

Cytopoint does not treat underlying infection. If your dog has a secondary skin or ear infection alongside their allergies - which is very common - that infection needs to be treated separately.

Which dogs is Cytopoint most suitable for?

Cytopoint is most appropriate for dogs with confirmed or suspected atopic dermatitis - environmental allergic skin disease. It is not effective for food allergies, which require dietary management. It is particularly useful for:

  • Dogs with seasonal allergies who need periodic rather than daily treatment
  • Dogs that cannot tolerate Apoquel or corticosteroids
  • Puppies and younger dogs where long-term daily medication is a concern
  • Dogs with concurrent health conditions that limit other treatment options

When to call us

If your dog is scratching, licking their paws, rubbing their face, or has recurring skin or ear infections, book a consultation. We will assess whether the cause is likely environmental allergy, food allergy, or something else - because getting the diagnosis right determines whether Cytopoint is the appropriate treatment.
